Careers like this require you to get a degree from a college. A law degree or something like an undergraduate degree based on another subject is usually what people want you to have in place. You’re also ging to need to get a GDL or Graduate Diploma in Law. Some people call it the CPE and that stands for Common Professional Exam. To get into the Bar you really have to compete and stand out from the crowd. Without a proper degree and the right training, you won’t be able to find any work due to how many others are always vying for a law-based career.

After a degree, you have to work through the BTPC, which can take a year or two to complete. Pupillage is when you take a year of training with any authorized training organization with a barrister that is experienced. The GDL you have to work on is offered by many people around where you live probably, but if not then you may have to travel a little since it’s a requirement. This teaches you things like how to research law or what the legal method is. You cannot expect to do a good job as a barrister if you’re not sure of what to do!

Graduating after you are called to the Bar is usually what happens when you are done with the BPTC, but this only happens if you are successful, so you have to pay attention. You’re going to find that there are a ton of competitors at any given time. You may not be able to get a pupillage the first time you try and you have to get it within the next 5 years after the BPTC. Try hard not to waste time because it could make you have to go through this all again if you don’t get to it within the next few years.
